What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy empowers “individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga" (International Association of Yoga Therapy.)  It is a client-centered healing modality that can reduce stress, reduce or eliminate existing aches and pains, and inspire a sense of calm. Yoga therapy brings balance to the body and mind and treats the whole individual, not just one illness or chronic ailment. I use a variety of tools, such as physical postures, breath work, guided meditations, philosophy and self-study to help support your wellbeing. I focus on your health and wellness goals at all levels of the person: physical, energetic, psychological, and spiritual. The ultimate goal is not only a decrease in physical symptoms or psychological symptoms, but for you to feel empowered in your journey.

What is a yoga therapy session like? What happens?

Prior to our first meeting I will send you an intake form to complete. It inquires about stress levels, sleep habits, medical history, present physical aches and pains, and mental health concerns. This will help me get to know you better and assist me in developing ideas for a plan of care. Our first meeting will last approximately 90 minutes. You will have a chance to ask any questions about yoga therapy and we will discuss your specific needs and goals. Based on your intake paperwork and our conversation, we will then develop a plan of care together which may consist of physical yoga postures, breathing exercises, meditation and other yoga practices. Each client’s plan of care is specific to their needs and goals.
